Tarun Tahiliani

When you see rich and opulent apparel tailored with modern western silhouettes, you know it is the work of noted Indian fashion designer Tarun Tahiliani. The man designated to head a corporation instead decided to venture into fashion design. Call it designed destiny!Tarun Tahiliani was born in Mumbai, India. Since his father, Admiral R H Tahiliani, served the Indian Navy, the family got posted at various Naval bases. By the time he was in his teens, his father had relocated to Delhi and Tarun to Doon School, a boarding school in Dehradun. From there, it was St. Stephens College, Delhi, and Vassar College, New York. After that, he pursued a degree in Business Management from the Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania. In the late 80s, when the young MBA returned to India and joined the family business of oil field equipment, he already knew this is not what he had envisioned. A taste of New York lingered. He felt it was time to bring a piece of America to India. He was getting ready to introduce the vibrant fashion sensibilities of the Western world to a changing India.

About Tarun Tahiliani – the designer

The Wharton School MBA had just spotted a business opportunity in the fine clothing and couture industry. He understood there was an enormous scope in the nascent designer wear sector of India. With his beautiful model wife Sailaja Tahiliani, he co-founded Ensemble in 1987. Ensemble was the first luxury multi-brand designer store. The store launched its own label Ahilian with other designer labels that belonged to Abu Jani & Rohit Khosla, Sandeep Khosla, Anuradha Mafatlal, American fashion designer Neil Bieff, and Anita Shivdasani and Sunita Kapoor’s joint venture label Anaya. The store became the to-shop-place for the social butterflies of Bombay (now Mumbai).

The runaway success of the venture prompted Tarun to take a closer look at fashion. He had started to sketch and soon followed it up with an associate degree from the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York. In 1995, he founded the Tarun Tahiliani Design Studio in Delhi, heralding a fashion and retail revolution in India with his signature Tarun Tahiliani collection. Couture, Occasion Wear, and Ready-to-Wear were evolving.

Fashion to fame

Tarun Tahiliani held his first solo show in September 1994 in London. In September 2003, he became the first Indian designer to participate at the Milan Fashion Week. Since then, Tarun Tahiliani collections have walked the ramp in New York, London, Tokyo, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Moscow, Durban, and Karachi.

Tarun Tahiliani Store and more

In January 2017, Tarun launched the Tarun Tahiliani flagship store at Mehrauli in New Delhi. The store embodies Tahiliani’s quest for Indian modernity. Like his sari gown, the space marries essentially Indian elements with a contemporary feel. Tarun himself says, “When you walk into my space, I want you to know you are entering my mind.” Besides the flagship store, Tarun Tahiliani designer wear is available at Eickhoff (Germany), Bijenkorf (Amsterdam), Elenora (Rome), Gio Moretti, Via Della Spiga (Milan), Eleven Monte Carlo (Monaco), Podium (Moscow), Scoop and Gus Mayer (New York) and Josephs (London).

Over the years, he also became known for his bridalwear. He was the founding member of the official fashion week governing body, the Fashion Design Council of India.

With his design aesthetic, Tarun Tahiliani has now stepped into the world of architecture and interior design. He has designed boutique hotels, resorts, restaurants, secondary and holiday homes in Goa. He has recently formalized an interior and architecture division that will work closely with several HNIs, institutions, and builders to leverage his design sensibility across various projects. He also continues to run the chain Ensemble with his sister Tina Tahiliani Parikh, who joined the business in 1990.
